Climate Justice Fast

SEA Change is hosting Portland’s Climate Justice Fast. During the day, fast participants meditate in public places, at night they stay at SEA Change. Visit www.climatejusticefast.org for more info. Below is a video interview I took of one the fasters, Sarah, who belongs to Touching Earth meditation community, www.touchingearth.wordpress.com and helps facilitate Food Not Bombs.

Here is an inspiring video from Climate Justice Fast’s website:

Healthy Bread in Five

@ Powell’s

www.artisanbreadinfive.com

Fellow homemade, healthy food advocates,  join us on Tuesday, November 3rd @ 7:30pm Powell’s City of Books on Burnside for a demonstration on how to make healthy breads from scratch, lead by authors Zöe François and Jeff Hertzberg.

ARTISAN BREAD IN FIVE MINUTES A DAY taught busy people how to make great bread at home, with only five minutes of active preparation time. Now, HEALTHY BREAD IN FIVE MINUTES A DAY whips up fabulous breads made with more whole grains, fruits and vegetables. The secret? Mix up a lightning-fast batch of moist no-knead dough, save it in your refrigerator, tear off portions over the next week or more, shape, and bake.

This summer, Katherine and Alec helped build a 3,000 square foot mud floor in a state of the art, non-toxic eco-home. The mud floor, aka poured adobe or earthen floor, is made from local and nontoxic materials: clay, sand, organic straw, cochineal pigment, linseed oil, and food grade wax. It is mixed in a mortar mixer, poured on the floor in wheelbarrow loads, and troweled out to a smooth, level surface. The octagonal eco-home is insulated with sheeps wool, will have mud walls and ceilings, is powered entirely off grid by a huge solar array, has an adjacent geodesic dome greenhouse, organic garden, orchard, and the best blackberries this side of the Willamette. Public Social University Chancellor Judith Fleming and President Rozzell Medina partook in the mudmaking, which was a project of Portland-based earthen floor aficionado From These Hands. While the days were filled with mud, evenings were spent camping in Triangle Lake, swimming in idyllic swimming holes and cascading down rock waterslides. Talk about a working vacation! Paradise!

Alec spent August in Minneapolis helping his parents move out of the house he had grown up in. In addition, Alec also helped rebuild the Utne farm, which is moving forward with the intention of becoming a space for spiritual, artistic, environmental, and community wellness. Katherine rendezvoused with Alec in Minneapolis and got a chance to see and meet with the incredible Walker Art Center and wonderful Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

This week, Katherine started graduate school at Portland State University. As a Master’s in Fine Art Candidate, Katherine will be focusing on Art in Social Practice, which explores how art can engage and effect society. Outside of school, Katherine is taking Toby Hemenway’s Permaculture Design Course and Heartland Circle’s Art of Convening.

Alec is also taking Art of Convening and looking for illustration work or general work with an organization that’s working to make the world a better place. If you have any leads for him, please do let him know alec@seachangegallery.org

October is the 8-month mark for SEA Change! Upcoming exhibits include Just Seeds, the Beehive Collective, Dan Carlin (hopefully!), Alicia Escott and the wonderful Matt Warren.

Join Portland lawyer, poet, and photographer Troy Payne as he presents an interactive, multimedia community discourse. Wander Payne’s winding path into the forest, down the river, and out onto the field under the open expanse of the night sky.  Sit together by the fire and share in a sense of wonder and endarkenment, at once empowering and humbling.  Consider the quiet lessons in the growth of trees and the reflection of the human potential for growth, rooted in a meaningful respect for the bearing Earth.  Dwell for an evening in the revelry of word, image, and song.
